The Wagon Wheel Beret honors the simple beauty of an ordinary wagon wheel. Designed to contrast the elegant geometry of a wagon wheel against the hardy texture of the terrain over which it travels, this beret is perfect for showcasing solid or semi-solid yarn with a bit of texture. The graphic motif on the crown is softened by the extra-roomy drape of the beret.
The “spokes” of the wheel are worked in k1, p1 ribbing and converge towards the center of the crown. Seed stitch sections between the spokes call to mind the grass, dirt, pebbles, and seeds that the wheel traverses. The height of this beret allows for flexibility in how it is worn. Knitters can also adjust the final size and drape of the beret by blocking to their preferred size.

SIZES: Due to beret shaping, approximate height and width are measured by folding the hat in half at the center of the crown and flattening as much as possible with one of the “spokes” running down the center. Height is measured along this center spoke held down as flat as possible from the bottom of the brim to the center of crown. Width ranges are measured along the very bottom of the brim, by stretching it just enough for it to lie straight against the measuring tape, and then measuring it as far as it can be comfortably stretched.
- 1 (height 7 in/17.8 cm, width 8.25-9.5 in/21-24.1 cm)
- 2 (height 8 in/20.3 cm, width 9.75-11 in/24.8-27.9 cm)
- 3 (height 9 in/22.9 cm, width 11.5-13 in/29.2-33 cm) Note: Listed measurements were taken after blocking. Pattern samples were worked using the same needle size for both brim and remainder of hat.
Final diameter sizes are flexible and based on desired drape. The pattern samples are blocked with the following diameters: 1 (8.25 in / 21 cm), 2 (9.75 in / 24.8 cm), 3 (11.5 in / 29.2cm).
GAUGE:
20 sts / 30 rds to 4 in / 10 cm in blocked k1, p1 ribbing pattern.
18 sts / 30 rds to 4 in / 10 cm in blocked seed stitch pattern.
NEEDLES: 4mm / US 6 size, or whatever size attains gauge. Circular and/or DPN needles may be used depending on preference. For a tighter brim, go down one or two needle sizes for the brim and then switch to larger needle size for remainder of hat.
NOTIONS: Stitch markers, darning needle.
YARDAGE: Approx. 130 (150, 200) yards / 119 (138, 183) meters of DK-weight wool. One skein of Ranching Tradition Fiber Tobacco Root Valley Yarn (250 yards / 228 meters per skein) is enough to complete a Wagon Wheel Beret.
