This pattern is a slouchier version of last year’s Waiting for Snow hat. The body of the hat is knitted straight up for a couple of inches, then increases a lot in one round, as for a tam. Little puffs create textural interest. These are worked by increasing 3 stitches to 5, working these stitches for a few rounds, then decreasing back to 3 stitches. The only stitches used are K, P, knit front and back, knit two together, slip-slip-knit, and make-one.

Instructions are given for one size; slight changes to size can be made by changing needle size or using different yarns. To make a significantly larger or smaller hat, add or subtract stitches in multiples of 6.

You will need about 100 g of a “fat” bulky yarn (100-110 yds per 100 g). If the yarn is stiff to knit (like the Noro Ginga) you may need nearly the entire 100 g.
