Wakefield, RI is a lovely village on the Saugatucket River; it has a long history of textile production. When visiting, I am impressed by the beautiful vintage homes in the Historic District. This shawl is my interpretation of a Victorian wall covering from one of these homes; the shawl transitions to my impressions of the surrounding formal garden of that dwelling. Wakefield Shawl begins at top center back and is worked down and outward. Due to extra increases every right side row, the finished shape is a wide crescent. The first design is an old-fashioned wallpaper motif which then intersects with a floral motif. A central panel echoes the design elements. Either version is appropriate for gradient, single color, or tonal yarns. The pattern contains instructions for two sizes, as well as customization for alternate yardages.
Note: The color changes in the large model are due to use of a gradient yarn. This pattern does not contain instructions for working color changes.
