Walk Tall
♫ The Music ♫
The song Walk Tall by Ziggy Marley (with Paul Simon) gave this design life:
“Walk tall, walk tall
Even if you fall get up…
… comes a time you gotta be strong…”
The main star of the pattern is the self-striping yarn - it really makes the design shine! These toe-up socks begin with a French toe. To that we add a few, well-placed increases and decreases and voila! - softly undulating stripes in brilliant colour.
Pattern Features
- Start with a French toe.
- The instep and leg are worked in the Stitch Pattern.
- The sole is worked in Stockinette stitch.
- The gusset increases are worked at the side of the sole.
- The heel is turned using a short row heel cap which means no picking up stitches.
- The heel flap is worked in a standard slipped stitch pattern.
- The ribbing is worked in an irregular knit-purl pattern to complement the stitch pattern.
The stitch pattern is charted with written directions provided.
To work the recommended bind off, knitters need to be able to ‘read their knitting’ i.e. identify knit or purl sts as they present themselves. However, an alternate stretchy bind off may be used.
Note - please consider this when choosing sizes: This Stitch Pattern does not have a great amount of stretch built in; therefore, even though the final foot circumference measurements are as stated, the finished sock will not stretch as much as some other patterns.
Size
Finished foot circumference: 7.5 (8, 8.5)“ / 19 (20.5, 21.5)cm.
Finished foot length: 8.25 (9.5, 10)” / 21 (24, 25.5)cm.
Bottom of heel to top of ribbing: 11” / 28cm.

360 (390, 420)yds / 329 (357, 384)m self-striping fingering / sock-weight yarn.
