This reversible shawl, an asymmetrical trapezoid, is knitted from the bottom up using garter stitch with simple short rows for shaping and an I-cord bind off. This forms sweeping wedges, outlined with eyelets from side to side, that remind me of gentle switchbacks easing an uphill walk.

My version is 64” wide unblocked and 18” deep, with a gently curved shape once off the needles; I have blocked it to emphasize the eyelet rows. It can easily be made larger or smaller by using different size and amount of yarn and different needles, but this pattern is only for the shawl as I have knitted it.

The only additional materials needed re scissors, a tapestry need, and a stitch marker - and I suggest a crochet hook in case it will be necessary to pick up a dropped stitch.

The simple design and stitch pattern make this the perfect project to show off a special yarn, such as this wonderful colorway that includes silk fiber to catch the light. The variegated yarn emphasizes the direction of each wedge section. The pattern is written rather than charted, is easy to memorize, and is suitable for a beginning knitter.
