2 length options: ankle and mid-calf

2 yarn weight options: fingering and worsted

CONSTRUCTION

Wandelbos Socks are knit toe-up, starting with a Provisional Cast On at the widest part of the Toe knit flat with German short-row shaping. Immediately after, the work is joined in the round to knit the Foot and intarsia stripe is started. German short-row Heel is worked over 60% of the stitches. After working the Heel, continue with the Leg with an intarsia stripe to the desired length (ankle, mid-calf or individual). Finish with a Half-twisted rib Cuff to keep the socks from sliding down, while giving them a slightly more sophisticated look. Ankle version also has an optional tab at the back of the cuff to make it easier to pull the socks on and ensure they stay in place while wearing.

PATTERN TECHNIQUES

  • Crochet Provisional Cast On OR Judy’s Magic Cast On
  • German Short-Row Toe / Heel
  • Knitting stockinette flat and in the round
  • Intarsia in the round with provisional join
  • Half-twisted rib
  • Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off (or elastic bind off of your choice)
  • Ankle sock only for optional ankle tab: reading charts and basic cables without cabling needle (right and left crosses)

GAUGE (per 4” / 10cm)

Fingering weight (held single):
34 sts x 50 rnds = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch with Needle A

Worsted weight (held double):
25 sts x 33 rnds

YARN

Fingering-weight sock yarn (~415-470 yd / 380-430 m per 3.5 oz / 100 g) held single or double.

The pattern is designed for Black Isle Yarns ‘Killen Sock’ (80% Bluefaced Leicester, 20% Mohair; 350 yd / 320 m per 3.5 oz / 100 g). One full skein of each color is sufficient to make 2 pairs of ankle socks and 1 pair of mid-calf socks. Sample knit in Size L.

See photos for yardage details.

Worsted weight (held double):
