Atlantic Canadian knitters have been making mittens with thrums—tufts of wool fibre worked into a knitted fabric—since the early 19th century. Thrummed mittens have a soft, fleecy lining that stays warm even when wet, making them ideal for fisherman working year-round in the North Atlantic. Everyone appreciates their coziness in the depths of winter, though!

This version updates the tradition with some unusual design details: a slipped stitch ribbed cuff, lifted increases a purl-delineated gusset, and a thrum-placement method that produces tidy, heart-shaped spots on the outside of the mitten.

In addition to yarn, this pattern requires 50 - 60g of unspun wool fibre, in the form of locks, roving or tops. The amount of fibre used will vary with each knitter and type.
