Washstand Back or Splasher, Also Lace Edging
This pattern comes from Weldon’s Practical Knitter, Number 142, Thirty-Fifth Series (1897). It is also published in Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume 12, Interweave Press, 2005.
The original pattern called for “Strutt’s knitting cotton, No. 8” and “two steel needles No. 14” (modern equivalent 2mm/US 0.) There are two panels in the pattern and these are knit, along with a lace edging. The strips measure 8” and 5” wide, respectively and the lace is three inches wide. The size of the finished object is left up to the knitter, as needed to cover an area of a wall behind a wash stand.
As with most 19th century patterns, there is no gauge/tension stated in the pattern. The pattern is written entirely in text and there are no charts. There are, however, illustrations of the panels and the lace edging.
