---------------------------------

“Wassersleben” is a sweater featuring two different eyelet patterns separated by purl ridges. It has an unusual construction: it’s worked sideways, starting at center, with short rows at the top which create the slanted rows and thus the bat-like shape.

The sweater should be worn with only a little bit of ease (or even no ease) at hip – choose your size by hip width, as the bust width will be a lot bigger anyway. But as you work sidewayss, the width can be customized easily as you go.

At the side seams, the pieces are joined by 3-needle-bindoff, and the sleeves are continued seamlessly to full or half length – or, for a slipover version, bind off after a last purl rib.

Gauge: 28 sts x 38 rows in pattern (11 rows = approx. 2,9cm), for a length of 64cm. For a shorter version (like my blue sample), use (heavy) lace yarn at 30 sts, or 26 sts for a length of 68cm.

Needles: Main needle size is 2,75mm (optionally 2,5mm for parts of the pattern repeat). 2,0mm used for edges.

Yarn: Approx. 1500/ 1600/ 1700/ 1800/ 1900 m of a (Light) Fingering or Heavy Lace yarn needed (for long sleeves).
For my thicker sample with long sleeves, I have used Yundi & Grete Linny (90% Merino, 10% Linen, 360m/ 100g).
For the thinner sample with short sleeves, I have used Zauberwiese Softmerino Lace 530 (100% Merino, 530m/ 100g).

The lace patterns of the sweater require a bit of concentration, so this pattern might not be the perfect TV knit or beginner’s project. However, there are simple knit and purl rows in between to relax, and every step is described in detail.
