Started at the center of the bottom and worked out in the round, “Watch the Clock” was named for its 12 wedges of Seed st bordered by columns of single knit sts. Those single sts then grow to form the cables that tilt their way across, and up, the sides of the bag.

Written and charted instructions are included. The charts are in separate pdfs.

needed for this pattern, in addition to the yarn:

  • 4.5mm/ US 7 needles for working in the round, or size need for gauge
  • 4.5mm/ US 7 needles, or same size as needed for gauge, for working the handles in rows
  • stitch holder (for handle)
  • st marker(s) (1 is needed to mark the beginning of the rnd; you’ll need 11 more if you want to mark each panel)
  • cable needle
  • tapestry needle

Further size information:

  • base (aka set-up rounds through end of chart 1) = 8”/20cm across
  • top of bag (held flat) = 16.75”/42.5cm across
  • height (not including handles) = 15.5”/39cm

7/22/16: updated PDF of written instructions as the abbreviations were missing from the original file

11/13/18: I have updated the written pdf to include the two smaller charts. The larger chart 2 remains a separate file

Update: With all the important discussions about accessibility going on, I’m making it a priority to go back through my patterns and add low vision pdfs to them. I’m using the guidelines set out by the Accessible Patterns group. A new Low Vision pdf has been added to this pattern’s file. This new pdf includes: all black text,
sans serif 22pt font, photo(s) captioned, pattern is left justified, and use of bold type in place of italics. All directions are fully written out line by line. This pattern can be completed without using any of the charts included.

Skills/Techniques Used:

  • knitting in the round, both small and larger circumferences
  • cable knitting
  • increases: make 1 (M1)
  • decreases: purl 2 together (P2tog), knit 2 together (K2tog), & slip next 2 stitches knitwise and individually, then knit them together through their back loops (SSK)
  • twisted stitch: purl stitch through its back loop (P tbl)
  • 3 needle bind-off (explained in pattern)
