Water is an asymmetrical triangle shawl worked with the same technique found in Waiting for Rain (amongst some of my other shawls), the technique I’ve called Softsweater Knits Charted Lace Short Rows.

The added fabric from the watery twisted stitch lace short rows creates a wonderful unique shape reminiscent of a teardrop. Turning the otherwise triangle shawl shape into something more likely to fall from the sky as rain.

Yarn:

2 skeins of Sweet Fiber Cashmerino 20 in colourway “Worn Denim” or 800 yards (732 metres) of fingering weight yarn. (although the finished photos of the yarn in the shawl are significantly less blue due to lighting and post-processing).

Needles:

3.75mm (US 5) circular needles in at least a 24” (60cm) cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

Notions:

29 stitch markers (if you want help keeping track of short rows).
Things to block your shawl with (pins or wires, whathaveyou).

Gauge:

22 stitches and 36 rows = 4” (10cm) square knit flat in garter and blocked.

Size:

72” (183cm) measured along the wingspan.
20” (51cm) measured at the deepest point.

K - Knit (K2 = Knit 2 stitches)
P - Purl (P2 = Purl 2 stitches)
KT - Knit stitch Twisted (KT2 = Knit 2 stitches Twisted)
PT - Purl stitch Twisted (PT2 = Purl 2 stitches Twisted)
K2TOG - Knit 2 Stitches Together
SSK - Slip, Slip, Knit
YO - Yarn Over
WS - Wrong Side
RS - Right Side
sts - Stitches

Turn your work - Simply turn your work as if you had ended the row (you’ll be mid-row though). Continue to work stitches as you would if you had just started a row. Video tutorial link found on

We shot this entire series of photos in 17 minutes out in the freezing frigid cold over at Iona Beach in Richmond BC. Nicola is an incredible trooper. We ran out of the car, took photos until my hands were aching from cold, and then ran back to the car.
