Watermelon Basket (2 sizes) with Lid
For watermelon lovers everywhere! This basket crochet pattern includes instructions for a watermelon basket in two different sizes, with a cap that fits directly on top. Use the pattern to create a large basket to hold toys, makeup and hair accessories, or a literal watermelon, or a small basket to hold jewelry, keys, or paperclips.
Skill level: Best for advanced beginner to intermediate crocheters, who are familiar with the terms chain, magic circle, slip stitch, half double crochet, crocheting in the back loops only (BLO), and increases.
Materials needed:
Size Large: Double-stranded super bulky weight (6) yarn. I use Wool Ease Thick & Quick by Lion Brand. You may use more or less depending on your tension:
• Green - 250yd / 400g, about 2.5 skeins
• Red - 70yd / 120g, less than 1 skein
• White - a small amount for 1 row
• A 10mm crochet hook
• Note: most size 6 super bulky yarn will work, but softer yarns like chenille or blanket yarn won’t hold their shape quite as well
Size Small: Double-stranded worsted weight (4) yarn
• Base - green, about 75yd / 40g
• Cap - red or pink, about 18yd / 10g
• White - a small amount for 1 row
• A 6mm crochet hook
Tapestry or sewing needle
Scissors
Optional: Black pony beads or black yarn
Language: Pattern is written in English, using USA crochet terms.
Basket description and size:
(Please note that exact size will depend on your yarn type and crocheting tension)
Large size: The cylinder basket has a flat base and two handles at the top on either side. Once complete the basket is about 10 inches wide and 10 inches tall.
Small size: The cylinder basket for the small size does not have handles, and when complete the basket is about 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall.
Pattern itself: The pattern is 8 pages and includes photos and detailed instructions. There are two files which will be available to download; the filename ending in “Printer Friendly” will use less ink for your printing needs.
