Waterspout is an airy, rectangular stole featuring chains, short stitches, and negative space. While it was designed in a sport-weight yarn, other weights of yarn can be substituted.

The bottom edging is worked first to allow for the use of a gradient yarn, if desired; the remainder of the wrap is then worked upward from the opposite side of the foundation chain. The simple top and bottom edgings mimic the self-edging on the long sides. As the wrap is worked from one end to the other, the top and bottom edges are similar, but not identical.

A partial stitch diagram is included.

This pattern uses American crochet terminology.

Skill Level: Easy.

Finished Size (after blocking): Approximately 10 1/2” wide by 62 1/4” long.

Yarn: Forbidden Fiber Co. Proverbs sport-weight yarn (60% cotton / 40% linen; 336 yd 307 m): 2 skeins (shown in color Bluebonnet).

I used less than a full skein of the second skein, so depending on your gauge you may be able to make a longer wrap, if desired.

Hook Size F (3.75 mm).

Notions: Yarn needle.

Gauge (unblocked): 7 V-sts = 4”; 12 rows in V-st / ch-st pattern = 4”. Precise gauge is not critical for this project, but note that the gauge will narrow and lengthen with blocking and further with wear. Blocked gauge for the sample was approximately 8 V-sts = 4”; 11 rows in pattern = 4”.
