Not Jude Law, not Martin Freeman, but Lucy Liu as Dr Watson was the initial inspiration for this cardigan.

Dr Joan has a gorgeous wardrobe, and often wears the same long, draped white cardigan. This design soon changed into something all of its own though - more feminine, and a little more structured. But most importantly, still elegant and easy to wear.

Watson is knit all in one piece - beginning with a short provisional cast on at the centre back of the neck, part of the collar is worked, then stitches picked up for a conventional top-down raglan construction. The collar is worked in a simple lace ribbing pattern stitch, which is echoed in the cuff and bottom edge, as well as the panel across the waist.

Skills needed are provisional cast on, picking up stitches, increasing and decreasing in stockinette stitch and simple lace work.

The cream sample shown is Madelinetosh Feather, and the shell-pink sample is sofTrope soft singles.

Watson requires 920 (1115, 1290, 1460, 1620, 1785) yards/840 (1020, 1180, 1336, 1482, 1632) metres of fingering-weight/4ply yarn.
