Wave Array Shawl
While the wind blows outside, this lacy shawl will keep you warm and toasty inside. Designed to be a companion to a cozy sweater or warm blanket, this piece provides delicate, lacy warmth. It is inspired by undulating waves you will see in multiple motifs throughout the pattern. If you live somewhere warmer, this is a perfect shawl – not overbearing but very snuggly. The circular shape is ideal to wrap over your shoulders and designed for more of a blanket effect than triangular shawls.
Construction:
This shawl is knit from the top center (the back of your neck when worn over the shoulders) down to the bottom edge. You will cast on a small number of stitches and increase along 5 points (the 2 edges plus 3 equally spaced points).
Materials:
-
US 5 / 3.75 mm | I used 60” / 152 cm circular needles. Please note the shawl will be 62” /157.5 cm at its longest so choose needles accordingly.
-
Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

Yarn:
Total: ~1200 yds / 1100 m of fingering-weight sock yarn.
Main Color: ~800 yds / 730 m
Contrast Color: ~329 yds / 295 m
The sample used 80% Superwash Merino / 20% Nylon yarn
Main Color (MC): Capella Luna Fibers Simple Sock in Sand Dune.
Contrast Color (CC): Sewrella Yarn Nylon Fingering in Provence.
I recommend choosing yarn with drape and flexibility. A silkier yarn would make a nice light, summer shawl while a wool yarn will create a warmer one. I like how superwash wool grows to create a big shawl which is one of the reasons I chose this yarn. Yarns that do not grow as much (acrylic, non-superwash wool, etc) will likely result in a smaller shawl.
Gauge:
Measured in a 4”x4” / 10 cm x 10 cm area, knit flat, and aggressively blocked.
- 22 stitches and 30 rows in garter stitch
Sizing:
This pattern is written in one size with the finished measurements of 62” / 157.5 cm wide x 29” / 73.7 cm tall
