Hat patterns based on slipped stitches are some of my favourites – you only need to use one colour per row and they look great for only a small amount of effort. The colour pattern on this hat is reminiscent of waveforms and is a great way to use up your yarn scraps in the contrast colour sections – it also showcases variegated yarns beautifully. I knitted up a few colour combinations to inspire you, but I can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

This hat is sized to fit an average adult and uses DK yarn, but guidelines are given for using different yarn weights or varying the size to suit you. The circumference of the hat when lying flat unstretched is 51 cm (20 inches) and the hat measures 23 cm (9 inches) from cast on to the top of crown.

You will need DK weight yarn in two colours with a good amount of contrast between them:

  • Main colour requires 100 metres (110 yards)
  • Contrast colour requires 50 metres (55 yards)

Using DK yarn on 4mm needles, there are 5 sts and 10 rounds per 2.5 cm (1 inch) when working garter stitch in the round. For the slipped stitch pattern that forms the hat body there are 5.5 sts and 6 rounds per 2.5 cm (1 inch).
