Waving Vines Socks
These socks display a rolling, stranded colorwork motif that could be interpreted as vines or waves. Most of the sock is pretty classic, vanilla sock territory with 26 rows of colorwork on the leg of the sock. This makes it the best of both worlds, something a little challenging plus easy knitting time!
I have included many tips on getting the best fit for your sock and considerations for colorwork. If you are new to colorwork socks, I have included helpful tips so you will love your final sock!

Construction:
These socks are knit cuff to toe, in the round starting with the 2x2 ribbed cuff. The leg is also knit in the round and includes colorwork. Next, the heel flap and heel turn are knit flat. You will pick up gusset stitches from the heel flap and work in the round while decreasing to the foot circumference. The foot is knit in the round in stockinette stitch and finished with decreases to create the toe.
Materials:
- US 1 / 2.25 mm in your preferred sock knitting style. Note that DPNs or magic loop is required in this size for the toe.
- Optional Colorwork Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm
- Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
- Beginning of Round Marker (stitch marker, scrap yarn, or other)
- Optional: 2-3 markers distinct from Beginning of Round (stitch marker, scrap yarn, or other)
Skills in this Pattern:
- Decreases (knitting 2 stitches together and slip, slip, knit)
- Kitchener Stitch OR 3 needle bind-off
- Knit stitch

- Knitting in the round
- Purl stitch
- Picking up stitches
- Reading a colorwork chart
- Ribbing
- Stranded colorwork with 2 colors
- Slipping stitches purlwise
- Twisted German Cast On or Preferred Stretchy Cast On
Yarn:
About 254 (290, 328, 367) yds / 233 (265, 300, 336) m of fingering weight sock yarn.
- Please see images for a breakdown of yardage in MC and CC for each size
- The samples used blends of 75-80% merino wool and 20-25% nylon. I recommend choosing your favorite sock yarn that will be sturdy with wear. For color selection, because the colorwork is delicate and intricate, I would recommend a high-contrast color combo.
Gauge:
Measured in a 4” x 4” / 10 cm x 10 cm area, knit in the round, and laid flat to block.
- 35 stitches and 45 rows in stockinette using US 1 / 2.25 mm needle
Sizing:
This pattern is written in four sizes: 7”, (8”, 9”, 10”) / 17.5 cm (20.5 cm, 23 cm, 25.4 cm). Tips for how to fit and size are included in the pattern.
