Wavy Days Bucket Hat
This is an Advanced level pattern for a groovy colorwork crochet bucket hat!
What exactly does advanced mean though and what makes this pattern so complex?
The difficulty of this pattern comes from the colorwork. Colorwork is something that can vary from easy to very difficult depending on the complexity of the colorwork pattern. My biggest goal when designing this hat was to have the wavy lines seamlessly grow as the amount of stitches in the hat grows which greatly increases the complexity of the colorwork. Another thing that adds to the difficulty of the pattern is that I wanted the length to be customizable so everyone is able to find the right length for them while still maintaining the continuity of the lines. This means that when it comes to the set up of the brim of your hat the pattern sort of turns into a “choose your own adventure”, i.e. I wrote quite a few different variations of the brim increase rnd to account for every possible hat length and the correct colorwork pattern to go with every hat length. You follow the specified variation of the brim increase rnd and the specified color changes based on the last rnd of colorwork that you crocheted so your wavy line pattern will seamlessly grow with the brim of the hat. In summary this pattern is difficult but it is in no way impossible! Based on the experiences and feedback of all of the amazing people on the testing team, all this pattern requires is lots of focus! You need to pay close attention to where you are in the repeat and the color changes that go along with the repeat section of each rnd. Previous colorwork experience is also recommended!
This design has two “sister patterns” (The Crochet Wavy Days Beanie and The Wavy Days Tote) that are good starting points if you want to learn colorwork and more specifically back loop tapestry crochet colorwork before following this pattern since the sister patterns contain very few or no increases :-)
