The musical The King and I is the fifth by Rodgers and Hammerstein and is based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. Anna, a British schoolteacher was hired as a governess to the children of King Mongkut and although the relationship between Anna and the King is not smooth, there is a love that neither can admit. The play ran for almost three years and had many tours and revivals, and was a hit receiving many awards including a Tony for the Best Musical. There were several subplots one being the secret love between a slave girl named Tuptim and Lun Tha, who are not happy about having to hide their relationship and sing We Kiss in a Shadow.
There are so many wonderful song in this show I Whistle a Happy Tune, Hello Young Lover, Shall We Dance to name a few but We Kiss in a Shadow just tugs at my heart.
