Weathertop Socks
Like the ruined watchtower, this sock is full of archways, columns, and twists. The Wild surrounds it and results in two “pathways” that intersect across the top of the foot. Hopefully these socks will help you find your way tramping through the wilderness.
Skill Level: Intermediate due to massive charting and some cabling.
Materials: Approx. 370-420 yds / 340-380m of sock yarn (solids and tonals will work best, but some mild variegation could work). The socks pictured have a large leg and a medium foot and are worked in Handmaiden Casbah in the colorway Bronze.
Tools: A cable needle, if necessary; a tape measure, scissors, and tapestry needle
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) or size necessary to get gauge sock needles
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per 1 inch /2.5cm in stockinette
Sizing: The Small (Medium, Large) sizes are approx. 8 (8.5, 9) inches / 20 (21.5, 23) cm. in circumference. The ankle stretch, leg height, and foot length are adjustable to fit and preference.
Notes: The socks call for more yarn than you might imagine. Plan on having extra handy, especially if you are working the large size. Also, the recommended yarn & needles creates a very dense fabric. If you prefer a thinner sock, consider using an alternate yarn choice or going up a needle size to US1.5(2.5mm) and working a smaller size than you would normally choose.
