Weaving a Spell
- Easy.
- Slipped stitches.
- Knit with one color or two, without fear.
- Has a woven look.
This one is kind of magical – just doing those little slipped stitches in two colors gives you a striped scarf if you look at it from the right angle. The stripes are less obvious from straight on. This can be done in two colors for more interest. If you use two colors, knit rows 1 & 2 with color A, rows 3 & 4 with color B. To begin a new color, just start knitting with it at the beginning of the row, leaving a 6” tail to weave in later. Just carry the other color of yarn up the side between rows. One color is fine, too; it will be all about the texture.
Slipped stitches are a fun way to work with 2 colors without the scariness that some folks feel about Fair Isle knitting. To slip the stitch, just move it to the other needle without knitting it. Stitches in knitting patterns are usually slipped purlwise unless it says otherwise.
Yarn: Two skeins of contrasting colors. The sample used a sport-weight (Reynolds Whiskey – 50g/195yards). One of each color will make a 60” scarf, 7 ¼” wide.
