Scarf Version
This pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience with stranded knitting where different colours of yarn are ‘carried’ across the back of the work. It also assumes an understanding of basic stitches and knitting terms including reading a colour chart. Skills used in the scarf pattern: cast on, cast off, knit stitch, purl stitch, working with changes of colour. The scarf is knitted in the round with repeating rounds of a wee house motif and solid stripes on a neutral background.

The scarf pattern gives the opportunity to use up lots of small quantities of spare yarn shades along with a larger amount of a background colour. The quantities noted for the sample are a guide. If you want to use up spare yarn in different colour ways, see below for approximate amounts. (Bear in mind this is just a guide and extra is required for pom poms).
Each stripe row requires about 1.5m
Each house colour with chimney uses about 2.5m
Each roof uses about 5m.

Yarn
Sample knitted in Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK in the following:
200g Brose (background colour), x100g Shale, x50g Wild Salmon, 50g Lichen, 50g Hawthorne, 50g Cairn, 50g Bracken, 50g Heather, 50g Gorse, 50g Loch, 50g Thrift, 50g Thistle.

Alternative Yarn
Suitable for most DK weight yarns. Choose a neutral main background and 11 contrast colours (or as many contrasting colours as you wish).

Knitting Needles
4mm/US7 circular knitting needle no more than 40cm/16ins long for working in the round.

Notions
Blunt tapestry needle for weaving in the ends. Card or other material of choice for making 35mm/1.5ins diameter pom poms. Spare yarn to use as stitch marker.

Finished Size
Approximately 173cm/68ins long x 18cm/7ins wide

Cowl Version
This pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience with stranded knitting where different colours of yarn are ‘carried’ across the back of the work. It also assumes an understanding of basic stitches and knitting terms including reading a colour chart. Skills used in the cowl pattern: provisional cast on, Kitchener stitch, knit stitch, purl stitch, working with changes of colour. The cowl is knitted in the round with repeating rounds of a wee house motif and solid stripes on a neutral background.

The cowl is a shorter, wider version of the scarf. It slips on over the head and is worn snug against the neck. There are five shades for the cowl plus a background colour.

Yarn
Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK in the following:
x1 100g ball in each, Brose (background colour), Lichen, Hawthorne, Firth, Gorse, Thrift.
Note: the entire 100g ball of Brose for the background colour was used in the sample cowl.

Alternative Yarn
Suitable for most DK weight yarns. Choose a neutral main background and 5 contrast colours (or as many contrasting colours as you wish).

Knitting Needles
4mm/US7 circular knitting needle no more than 40cm/16ins long for working in the round. Second needle of same size for completing Kitchener stitch.

Notions
4mm crochet hook for provisional cast on, blunt tapestry needle for weaving in the ends, spare yarn for provisional cast on and stitch marker.

Finished Size
Approximately 83cm/33ins in circumference around the neck x 22cm/9ins wide
