This design is inspired by the layering of warp and weft threads in woven fabric to create different constructions: tartans, fancy tweeds, twills, sateens, handloom saris, jacquard cloth and many more. The versatility of weaving and variety of fabrics it can create is a source of great fascination to me, especially when different textures and colours are used in conjunction with different weaves to produce interesting, overlapping patterns.
The stitch is fascinating to work as it builds up the woven effect with each row and after the first few rows are set up, which honestly do take a bit of concentration, it’s a surprisingly easy pattern to follow.

It is graded to be worked as a scarf, wrap or rectangular shawl by adjusting the number of stitches you start with.

Sizes: Select from 3 widths: scarf, wrap or shawl. The standard pattern instructions provide a single length for each of these plus customisation tips for those wishing to adjust the width or length from these standard sizes.

Gauge: 16 sts & 7 stripes = 10cm / 4” over wefan stitch pattern using 3.5mm/E-4 hook after gentle blocking. One 9 stitch repeat is 5.5cm/2.5” wide and one 2 row repeat is 4cm/1.75 tall

Working method: worked from one short edge to the other. A simple border is added to the long edges for stability and neatness and an optional edging is worked along the short edges for decorative purposes.

Finished measurements
Finished length: 168cm/66”
Finished width options: 22 (44, 66)cm / 8.75 (17.5, 26.25,“

Requirements
Choose yarns with varied textures and or colours that keep to the stated gauge and won’t stretch out of shape when washed. I like a sturdy, a slippery and a fluffy yarn.

Yarn B: King Cole Finesse Cotton Silk DK (DK; 23% silk, 77% cotton; 120m / 130 yds per 50g skein) in Fondant: 2 (4, 6) balls or 225 (450, 675)m / 250 (500, 750)yds

If you are making this for a deadline, allow yourself longer than you might think. Most crocheters are slower when they need to crochet into a chain rather than a chain space and for this stitch pattern you will need that often.
This pattern uses US terminology and a UK terminology version is also available. Please be sure you are using a copy in your preferred terminology. I recommend that you read through the pattern before starting.

I sometimes add extra resources for my patterns, e.g. yarn substitutions, adaptations, styling suggestions or helpful video clips as updates on my original blog post for the release, so consider checking it out here.
