Weldon's Bay Leaf Block II
This pattern is from 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.4. I eliminated the garter stitch borders that created a big X through the 4-triangle block. I also changed the double decrease in the bay leaves, added short stems and made other small changes. If you’d like to work the original Victorian pattern, see Piecework Magazine’s reprint of Weldon’s volume 1 or see Hewitt and Daley’s Motifs, Borders and Trims in Classic Knitted Cotton, pp.50-51.
Four triangles make a block 10 inches square at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, ktbl, M1 (see note), YO, DCD (double central decrease) and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
43 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 1 triangle in the stated gauge.
