Weldon's German Trellis
This popular pattern from ca. 1891 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 4, p.3, has a 10-stitch, 12-row repeat. There are also 2 edge stitches that help form the pattern. All the wrong-side rows are purl across. The sides of the knitting will scallop before blocking but, since the stitch count doesn’t vary, you can block this pattern with either straight or scalloped sides. This pattern also appears in 1892 The Art of Knitting and 1989 Knitting Counterpanes.
It’ll take about 1 hour to knit 3 inches of a 44-stitch-wide strip.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, SSK, SK2P and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
65 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 44-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
