Weldon's Kite
This pattern is from ca. 1893 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 6, p.10. Oh, all the things you can do with just knit and purl stitches! The pattern has a 14-stitch repeat with 15 extra stitches. I converted 2 of the extra stitches into selvage stitches for easier sewing as this would make a great afghan strip! The pattern also has a 28-row repeat but it’s still simple to work. The wrong-side rows just follow the right side rows: a knit stitch on the right side will be purled on the wrong side, etc. The last 14 rows are a mirror image of the first 14 rows.
The 43-stitch swatch (2 repeats + 15 edge stitches) is 7.75 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
77 yards of LB collection “Cotton Jeans” yarn will make 10 inches of a 43-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
