From ca. 1897 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 10, p.13, this edging doesn’t have to be in wool. It has a 16-row repeat and starts with just 7 stitches. The edging increases to 17 stitches by the 15th row and returns to 7 stitches on the 16th row. I love the nubby header edge of this pattern! The lace would look great sewn to a fabric that showed off the nubbies.
The swatch is 1.5” at its widest at the stated gauge. It’ll take about 1 hour to knit 4.5” of this edging. Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 color shown is “Maize”. Aunt Lydia’s colored crochet thread is thinner than its white thread; I went down a size in needles to compensate.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, yarn over twice, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

10 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 crochet thread will make about 4.5 inches of edging in the stated gauge.
