This deeply textured but surprisingly simple pattern is from ca. 1890 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 3, p.7. This pattern is a slightly smaller version of Jane Gaugain’s pineapple purse pattern in 1841 The Lady’s Work Book. Weldon’s version has a 12-stitch, 16-row repeat. There are 5 rows with stacked increases and stacked decreases followed by 3 rows of stockinette stitch. Those 8 rows are then repeated, just shifted over 4 stitches. The stitch count per row remains constant.
My version has central double decreases on the knit (S2KP) and purl (CDDp) sides so the knit side could be used for the right side. If you prefer the purl side for your right side, use any double decreases (both knit and purl) that work best for you: they’re not going to affect the appearance of the purl side.
The 42-stitch swatch is 5.25 inches wide when blocked to gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, M1 (see notes), S2KP, CDDp and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

85 yards of Bamboo Pop will make 10 inches of a 42-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
