This reversible (but not identical on both sides) pattern from ca. 1891 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 4, p.7, has a 5-stitch, 6-row repeat. I added 2 selvage stitches. Railway Stitch doesn’t curl, so blocking is optional.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

66 yards of Lion brand 24/7 yarn will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
