This reversible pattern from ca. 1897 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 9, p.14, has a 12-stitch, 4-row repeat. There are also 6 non-repeating stitches and 2 selvage stitches in each row. It’s very simple and “readable” for times when you need something easy. This pattern is written as an afghan strip but the texture could be used in anything you choose. The equal number of knit and purl stitches make a non-curling fabric. Blocking is optional.
It’ll take about 1 hour to knit 5.5 inches of a 32-stitch-wide swatch.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

30 yards of Lion brand 24/7 cotton yarn will make 5 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
