The hook size I entered is a suggestion. The pattern is not precise. Here is what it says with regard to materials:

“…the bag shown in the engraving is a dainty article measuring 9 inches in depth, and is worked in crochet with one ball of brown macrame string of medium size, using either a rather coarse steel crochet needle or a fine bone one; it has two crocheted handles, and is beautified with a piece of 1 1/2 inch wide old gold colored fancy edged ribbon which is treaded through the crochet round the opening….”
