Weldon's Snowdrop
This popular pattern is from ca. 1893 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 6, p.3. It’s repetitive in a good way with predictable stitch sequences. If you prefer snowdrops that aren’t so puffy, work a reverse stockinette stitch background instead of the garter stitch background in the snowdrop section.
Blocking the square required putting glass marbles under the snowdrops and pinning the background down around the snowdrops to get a uniform shape! I used marbles just over 0.5” diameter. You can use any technique you like to block the snowdrops. 4 squares are sewn into a block with the snowdrops meeting in the middle. An individual square is 7” on a side at gauge.
If you need a smaller square, you can work just 6 snowdrops ending with row 52, then start the eyelet section at row 69.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, SSK, k2tog, p2tog and SK2P.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
75 yards of #10 crochet thread will make a square in the stated gauge.
