This afghan strip/insertion is from ca. 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.6. It has a 13-stitch repeat with 6 edge stitches (2 of these are selvage stitches) and a 4-row repeat. There are also 4 set-up rows. You can omit the 2 selvage stitches, if needed. The swatch has 2 repeats (32 stitches across) and is 4 inches wide at gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, p2tog, SSK and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

55 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
