All white is one traditional choice but the original pattern in 1899 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume 10 calls for red or any other color as an accent with white as the main color. The knitted tassel takes about 70 yards of cotton thread. It’s filled with a traditionally-made tassel that takes more than 70 additional yards of thread. If you prefer to save thread, choose an alternative stuffing such as cotton balls or thick cotton yarn.
Weldon’s calls the knitted zigzag made from increases and decreases “Van Dyke”.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, purl, k2tog, yarn over, knitting in the round and binding off in knit stitch.
