Weldon's Wheat Ear Afghan
The first row of this pattern from Weldon’s Volume 1 was so error-filled, it took most of a day to figure out the correct stitches! Weldon’s original image was also upside-down! Mercifully, there are only 6 rows to this pattern. The 3 wrong-side rows are identical and are just knit and purl stitches. The pattern starts at the tops of the wheat ears and works toward the stems. (You can turn the strip so the wheat ears point upwards, if you prefer.) I recommend 1 or 2 needle sizes larger than usual due to “sl1, k3tog, PSSO” in the first row and “sl1, k4tog, PSSO” in the third row.
The sample is 23 stitches wide: 1 repeat + 4 selvage stitches. The pattern is set up for multiple repeats, if desired. The repeats will have 4-stitch-wide garter stitch sections between them.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, purl, slip, yarn over, k2tog, SSK, SK2P, bind off in knit stitch and the 2 big decreases mentioned above.
The sample gauge is 7.7 stitches/inch and 12 rows/inch with #10 crochet thread and U.S. #3 (3.25mm) needles (blocked) but gauge is not important in this pattern. Width and length of this strip are determined by the knitter.
10 yards of #10 crochet thread will make about 16 rows (1.3 inches) of a 23-stitch strip at above gauge.
