Weldon's Wide Open Border
If you like yarn overs, this reversible edging from 1889 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume 2 is for you! This was another surprise, no-image Weldon pattern. The edging varies from 16 to 36 stitches over 12 pattern rows. I changed the cast-on, bind-off and a few other stitches to help the edging lie flat. This edging needs careful blocking and, if knitted to gauge, is best on an 8” diameter item due to the flare in the “feathers”.
Skills needed: “Jeny’s stretchy slipknot cast-on”, knit, purl, k2tog, slip, yarn over, yarn over twice and “Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind-off”. See free online videos for Jeny’s techniques.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
9 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 21 rows (1.75 inches) in the stated gauge.
