Weldon's Wrinkled Shell II
This afghan strip from Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 3, p.14 could have slipped into obscurity as there was no image of it. Very few knitters would try a pattern without knowing what they were making! I had to knit and hope it was Ravelry-worthy. Although the original pattern is attractive, I added 4 stitches for better proportions. With just 6 pattern rows and a lot of repetition in the side stitches, Wrinkled Shell II is fairly easy to memorize and works up quickly.
There’s a “p2tog tbl” but only 1 in the entire 6-row repeat. See pattern notes for an easy way to work this stitch. 36 rows (6 repeats) took 1 hour to knit.
The bigger sample is 4.5 inches wide and was made with Lion brand OH BABY organic cotton yarn.
The smaller sample is Weldon’s original pattern. It is 3 inches wide and was made with #10 crochet cotton thread and U.S. #2 needles.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, p2tog tbl, slip a stitch purl-wise, slip 1 stitch over 2 stitches and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
16 yards of Lion brand OH BABY organic cotton yarn will make about 2.5 inches in the stated gauge with a 29-stitch wide strip.
