Wengwings
Who can resist these cute socks? Knitted top-down and using a flap-and-gusset heel, these stranded colourwork socks are fun to knit and comfy to wear. And the name? “Wengwings” is what my two-year-old called the birds on the socks!
Written with a choice of three sizes, the socks can be made in Small (to fit a foot circumference of 7-7.5”), Medium (to fit foot circumference 8-8.5”) or Large (to fit foot circumference 9-9.5”). Ankle circumference is roughly the same as the foot circumference but be aware that stranded work is often less stretchy than plain stocking stitch.
Pattern tension is 8 sts/1 inch (2.5cm) using 2.5mm (US 1.5) needles over the stranded leg section, and 8.5sts/1 inch using 2.25mm (US 1) needles over the stocking stitch foot section.
The penguin pattern is charted - you need to be able to read a colourwork chart. You need to know how to work in the round, and how to graft toes using Kitchener stitch.
You will need up to 275 yards of the main colour yarn (blue in the sample shown) and up to 150 yards of the background colour yarn (white in the sample shown). The socks are worked in fingering weight yarn. You will also need needles for working in the round in size to achieve pattern tension, 2 stitch markers, and a darning needle.
