West Hills is a quick-knit shawlette using a single skein of space dyed yarn. It gets its name from two shawls, each one designed by Romi Hill and Stephen West, and each of which has elements used in this project. After numerous cast on stitches, the piece is shaped and expanded over a simple two row repeat, and the yarn itself plays a role in the color spots, using short rows to make one color stand out in the yarn’s spectrum. No two projects will be alike, and this is a good way to test your judgment on things like gauge, colorwork and design

MATERIALS:
One skein of space dyed sock or fingering yarn. Choose a yarn that has at least 2 colors within the yarn, though more is suggested for color interest. The distinguishing color chosen for the color spots should be visible and no more than a third of the skein in the rest of the colors. Before casting on, I recommend knitting a swatch and playing around with the colors and short row color spots to see what works for the project.

NOTES ON THE PROJECT:
I used the long tail cast on, and stopped at 150 stitches when I began to run out of tail. The result was the sample piece shown. To make the shawl larger to your desire, cast on more stitches. If you’re unsure of how much tail, use the cable cast on method, and stop when you are at your desired number of stitches. The sample only used about 200 yards, so if you choose to go up to 250 stitches or so to use an entire skein of sock yarn, you should have enough.
