The Westerly is a simple hat, suitable for a beginner or someone looking for an easy and relaxing knit to do whilst watching TV. Named for the winds that regularly batter the Folkestone coastline, this soft and chunky hat will keep your head and ears warm on beach walks and winter days.

Sizes:
Small (above left) – 16” (41cm) unstretched.
Medium (above centre) – 19” (48cm) unstretched.
Large (above right) – 20” (51cm) unstretched.

Skill Level:
Beginner. Skills needed are cast on, knit and purl, stocking stitch, knitting in the round and simple decreases.

Tools needed:

  • 2 x 100g skein of Folkestone Harbour Yarn Super Chunky merino hand dyed yarn (65m per 100g) or Naturally Dyed Corriedale (32.5m per 50g) available from FolkestoneHarbourYarn.com
  • 8mm circular needles or double pointed needles. Optional: set of 8mm DPN’s (double pointed needles) for when decreases make your round quite small.
  • Stitch marker to mark start/end of round.
  • Large needle for weaving in ends.

Yarn Substitutes:
Any super chunky yarn with a length between 32-37m per 50g.

Gauge:
Gauge is important otherwise your hat may be too big, or you may run out of yarn. The ideal gauge is 2½ stitches and 4 rows per inch after blocking. See techniques section if you are unfamiliar with tension squares.
