Westside Socks
This summer we were drawn far west - to the most western point of Brittany - “Point du Raz” - where waves thundering against the rocks, the Atlantic is rough and the wind blows in strong gusts…
Warm hand-knitted socks - they are essential at such a place, even for the big boys, real men and strong women!
A doubled wave band runs along the outside of the leg, merges into the heel at the back and meanders along the outside of the foot down to the toes.
The socks are worked top-down on a circular needle (magic loop method), but it’s also possible to work with DPNs or with trio-needles.
And don’t worry about the heel! In my search for a really simple but well-fitting heel I came across the “Strong Heel”. This heel was introduced in 2003 in “Knitters Issue 73” by Geraldine Crawford Strong - hence the name. This heel offers many advantages:
- It is really easy to knit, because you only have to work simple increasings.
- It is knitted almost continuously in rounds (with a few short rows), so no picking up of stitches from the heel flap and no annoying holes.
- It can easily be adjusted to any foot shape or width and has an excellent fit.
- All kinds of patterns can be easily “built in”.
Basic knowledge and some practice in knitting is all you need. All steps are explained in detail. For techniques that might not be quite so familiar - such as an elastic cast-on - there are also “links” to helpful videos.
All patterns are charted and written.
