Whakatu Cowl is an easy, 1 skein, reversible cowl, great to whip up as a quick gift knit.

The snuggliness and squishiness of this cowl will keep the wearer warm around the top of the chest and neck, where clothing often stops. This tends to be where I get chilly and I find cowls that hang lower are not as warm as ones like this that sit closer to my neck.

This cowl uses one skein of Lion Brand Heartland yarn (a worsted to aran-weight yarn). It is knit from the bottom up, with a folded edge at the top. You do not have to do the folded cuff, but it does give the “wrong side” a “right side” look, making it easily able to be worn with either side facing out.

Finished circumference: 54cm (22”)
Finished height: 32cm (12.5”) - very easy to make taller if you’d like, but you will need additional yarn.

‘Whakatu’ is the Maori name for Nelson, the town in New Zealand where I live. The photos in this pattern were taken at Queens Gardens in Nelson.

Skill Level: Confident beginner
Techniques Used: Knitting and purling in the round, long-tail cast on (or your favourite stretchy cast on), picking up stitches, kitchener stitch (linked tutorial)
