This is a pattern for a pair of fingerless mittens, featuring Mango the Wandering Tortoise and the new love in her life, Orzo. Yes, Mango will need to roam no more, now she has her very own “Romeo”.

I have written this new pattern, using and adapting elements from my Mango The Wandering Tortoise sock pattern, for those who are not inclined towards knitting socks. It is a fairly straightforward stranded pattern with a pre-planned “afterthought” thumb. An excellent tutorial for this is given on Mary Jane Mucklestone’s web page: http://maryjanemucklestone.com/videos-and-tutorials/

The pattern is written for an average adult hand but can be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the rows of cuff ribbing and/or going up or down a size of needles.

Any 4ply sock yarn will be suitable and only a small amount will be required. My mittens took less than an ounce of each colour. I used Coastal Colours Hand Dyed Luxury Knitting Yarn 4ply for the dark background colour, and Cascade Heritage 5644 Lemon, for the contrast.
