Where the Sidewalk Ends
“Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein is one of my favorite childhood books. Read more about the poem of the same name and the pattern on my website.
The Where the Sidewalk Ends blanket is knit with super bulky weight yarn so it is quick to knit on big needles.
Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on US size 13 or 15 circular knitting needles.

DIRECTIONS FOR SIX SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…
Baby: 30” wide x 30” long
Small (Crib/Lap): 34.25” wide x 35” long
Medium: 37” wide x 47.5” long
Large: 42” wide x 50” long
XL: 46” wide x 52.5” long
XXL: 50” wide x 55” long
Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2.5” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.
SKILL LEVEL: Easy/Beginner
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends. Blocking of finished knitting is recommended.
SUPER BULKY YARN:
Baby: 415 - 450 yards
Small (Crib/Lap): 550 - 600 yards
Medium: 800 - 850 yards
Large: 980 - 1060 yards
XL: 1150 - 1250 yards
XXL: 1300 - 1400 yards
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.
This pattern will work well with many super bulky weight yarns.
I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in the color “New York White” for the blanket shown in the photos. The pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Thick & Quick or Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick.
You may also experiment with knitting two strands of bulky or worsted weight yarn together…remember you will need about twice as much yardage!
The texture of the pattern will show up best with solid color yarns.
If you would like to use DK or worsted weight yarn, see my Summer Sidewalk blanket knitting pattern.
GAUGE:
Garter stitch with US size 13 or 15 needles: approximately 8.5 stitches & 14 - 15 rows = 4”
This blanket is very stretchy so measuring gauge can be tricky…depending on how much the blanket is stretched. Exact gauge is not essential. However, a significantly looser gauge will require more yarn.
CIRCULAR NEEDLES:
In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are highly recommended. I use circular knitting needles 38” in length for larger blankets. For a crib or baby blanket, circular needles in a shorter length could be used.
This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.
Written pattern with row by row instructions.
