Whirlwind Blanket Trilogy
I have long thought about the granny square, it’s composition, it’s many personalities. I’ve admired how square it can be with the right technique, and delighted in the oopsie ones that would twist in the round, defying the rules.
I started to think about that and wondered why we wanted to follow the rules so badly! So I started encouraging it to see what else it would do….Nearly a year in the making….. I bring you the Whirlwind!
Gauge is not particularly important to this pattern, but I have included my gauge for the basic 4-weight/Aran yarns like Red Heart Super Saver and Loops & Threads Impeccable. The pattern is repetitive, and with an increase in the same place each time it is easy to memorize right from the beginning. Bonus: you can make it as big or small as you like!
My blue and white sample was made with Impeccable yarn and 6.5 mm/K hook. My testers that used Red Heart also used that hook. Bernat Blanket yarn was also used in a test with 10mm. **It is important to note that we used several hook sizes above the recommended hook for the yarn as this pattern will curl in otherwise.** If you crochet tightly, or find that your blanket starts to curl in, go up a hook size or 2 and it will flatten out.
I would rate this a beginner pattern as it uses basic stitches of chain, double crochet, and slip stitch. However, it is written in what can be called shorthand. I do not spell out each stitch, but rather my instructions look more like this: ch3, dc in same st, dc 6…. which would read ch3, dc in same st, dc in each of the next 6 stitches.
