Whirly Wings shawl
This is a lace triangle shawl that fans out a bit at the tips, like wings. It mixes textured stripes with lacy triangle patterns in different sections. The edge has beautifully textured details with triangle patterns and several different beaded tassels to top it off perfectly at the ends.
Pattern includes:
• Written PDF pattern with instructions, ENG (US terms) and SWE (Swedish/ svenska)
• A chart / diagram for the pattern
• A chart / diagram for the edge
• Photo tutorial for the front post double crochet with step-by-step written instructions for the stitch.
• Complete stitch count for the entire pattern, also including the edge.
• Written instructions for the front post triple (treble) crochet which connects back to the photo tutorial for the front post double crochet to make it easier to understand.
• Photo tutorial for the back post double crochet with step-by-step written instructions for the stitch.
• Photo tutorial for the two triple (treble) crochet together (2trctog) with step-by-step written instructions for the stitch.
• Measurements together with a figure demonstrating the shape and size on how my shawl turned out using the Scheepjes Whirl yarn and some extra info around this since the pattern only uses about 800 meters if you choose this yarn.
• Written information and instructions for how to make the tassels and the different sizes.
I also have a video instruction on how to make tassels in general which you can find here: https://youtu.be/O6L77bLgf5c
Size
This is a one size shawl with a determined number of repeats, but the size can vary some depending on which yarn and hook you use. This is an example of how mine turned out with this yarn and hook. Blocking is recommended with this pattern but is also determined by which yarn you choose.
I made mine with the Scheepjes Whirl, color Blackcurrant squeeze me (fingering yarn, ~215 gram, 1000 meters). For my shawl I used a 3.0 mm (D) hook.
Recommended yarn is somewhere around a 3.0 – 4.5 mm hook size (around a D - G or a 3 – 7). A bigger sized hook and heavier weight yarn usually equals a larger shawl.
This shawl is smaller than a whole whirl so it doesn’t require the entire whirl.
I have also done this with a shorter yarn –Manos de Uruguay, Marina, which is 800 meters/ 874 yards, lace weight wool yarn with a 3.5 mm/ E/ 4 hook. I had enough left to do all tassels and some extra left over afterwards too.
This means that you can use other yarns with shorter yardage than the Scheepjes Whirl or the Hobbii Twister, if you want to.
The size of my shawl with the Scheepjes Whirl yarn
Along the long side you wrap around your shoulders: 140 cm / 55 inches
From one side point to the middle point: 127 cm / 50 inches
I think I used around 800 meters of the whirl so I got some of it left.
Pattern uses the following stitches:
slip stitch
chain
chain space
single crochet
double crochet
front post double crochet
back post double crochet
treble (triple) crochet
front post treble (triple) crochet
two treble (triple) crochet together
