Perisoreus canadensis, or whisky jack or Canada jay, is found in boreal forests throughout Canada, including the mountains of Southern Alberta. It was popularly (but not officially) voted to be our National Bird as it can be found in all 10 provinces and all 3 territories. Whisky jacks are very smart – they cache food in multiple locations within the forest so they can protect against theft. Whisky jacks are quite friendly and will follow hikers on trails looking for handouts. Whisky jack is an English interpretation of the indigenous word wisikejack or “mischievous prankster”. The outspread wings of the whisky jack are the inspiration for this cowl.
