When I discovered this particular skein of Maiden Hair, I fell in love instantly, and immediately snatched it up into my stash. I came across this lovely simple lace stitch that creates arcs of colour. As I began to knit it up I quickly realized that the colour and the pattern as they developed reminded me of Kimmirut, and the Northern Lights I had seen there. In the far north they say that if you whistle at the Northern Lights they are drawn closer to you. And so “Whistle Down” became the name of this scarf.

You could use some of Hand Maiden’s other delicious yarns such as Sea Silk or Casbah, but I like the halo of the mohair.

I knit this beautiful scarf with one skein and had yarn to spare. You could increase repeats of the pattern (over 6sts) and make a nice shawl as well.

This lace pattern is extremely simple, but does take a little bit of attention as all good lace work should.
