The neckwarmers were designed for smaller short-coated dogs (the ones who most need some extra warmth in the winter) and the dog's best friend, their human pals (who are a treasured source of food, fun and frivolity!) Given the cold winters of late, keeping all the family warm on an outing is top priority.
The inspiration for the Whitby Warmers design was from fishermen knitting stitch patterns from the UK.
Author Gladys Thompson charted many traditional fishermen knit stitch patterns in her book Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys Arans. She toured towns and villages along the UK coastline in search of knitting patterns, and documented them in detail. While many of the stitch patterns had traditional names, Diamonds, Ladder Stitch, Herring Bone, and many more, there are several in her book that she named after the town she found them in.
The pattern that caught this knitter’s eye was the Whitby Pattern I. Simple alternating squares of purl and knit are flanked by two columns of knit stitches, and for me, it invited variations. In the Whitby Warmers the squares change in both size and colour, to create neckwarmers that both fit and flatter all the family.
