During initial photography tests, Jack’s iconic pinstripe suit was solid black. Due to the limited palette of Halloween Town of black, white, and orange, Director Henry Selick added thin pinstripes to Jack’s suit to make him stand out more against dark backgrounds. The regular, even stripes also play a role in helping him stand out against the slanted angles of the set. The sets in a stop-motion film play a large part in setting the tone and sometimes require even more work. Some sets measure up to forty by twenty feet, while others are a square foot. From concept to construction to figuring out every detail, the film’s Art Department was encouraged to push the envelope and come up with a way to make everything slightly off kilter. Designers began drawing with their opposite hands which did the trick according to artist Kelly Asbury, who said, “It made everything just a little unsound.” Art Director Deane Taylor was also told that, “A right angle is a wrong angle” and that Halloween Town should be very jagged and sharp. Heavily influenced by German Expressionism and old monster movies, the overall look is one of whimsy, light and shadows, an anxious atmosphere, and distorted perspective.
